What are Essential Oils?
Justin Harrison describes essential oils as “the super-highly concentrated liquid version of the plant.” The chemical compounds that benefit the plant can be harvested so that they benefit us.
Why doTERRA
Not all essential oil brands have the same purity, therefore their effectiveness will vary as well.
The oil industry is largely unregulated. Only 3% pure essential oil is required to be in the bottle for it to be labeled pure therapeutic essential oil.
doTERRA is Pure and Safe. Every liter of oil is tested 9 different ways by 2 independent labs before it is even purchased. If the tests don’t come back up to the CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) standard, we do not purchase the oil. Once it is purchased, it continues to be tested by our own labs. And nothing but that pure oil is put into our bottles.
A plant growing in it’s indigenous or ideal environment is naturally going to have stronger, more effective constituents.
Three ways to use essential oils
Aromatically – through the nose. Helps to affect mood, clean the air, support respiratory health.
Topically – through the skin. Remember to dilute! Helps to target a specific area of concern or affect the skin. Use on feet to safely influence the whole body.
Internally– for kids over 6, only doTERRA, and only if there are supplemental facts on the side of the bottle. A drop under the tongue or a few drops in a veggie cap are very effective ways to support a systemic affect and influence the digestive tract.
Oils have 3 “temperatures”
Mild – These are oils that can be use neat, with no dilution for most people.
Medium – These are oils that can be used undiluted, but you may want to dilute them
Hot – These oils need to be diluted. Cinnamon Bark, Lemongrass, Cassia, Clove, Oregano and Thyme are all examples of hot oils.
Diluting
My Rule is always dilute unless you have a reason not to. Just makes it easier.
How much do I use
Rule of thumb – Less oil used more often is better than more oil used less often.
Many times a drop or two is all that is needed.
Basic Safety
- Do not put citrus oils on skin and then expose that skin to the sun for the next 12 hours. You will burn.
- Oil and water do not mix.
- Always do a patch test on the inside of your elbow or wrist if you are concerned about sensitivities. Use a carrier oil for your patch test.
- If something feels uncomfortable use coconut oil, olive oil or another fat-based oil to dilute that feeling.
- If you get oil in your eyes, use fractionated coconut oil, regular coconut oil or some other fat-based oil to dilute it! DO NOT USE WATER!
- Never drip essential oils into the eyes, ears, or nose.
- Essential oils can be flammable, keep away from heat sources
- Keep oils in a cool, dark place with caps on
- Always drink your oils out of glass or stainless steel.
How often can I use oils?
For most issues, once can be enough. For long-term support, use 2-4 times a day.
