“Not all oils are created equal”
So why doTERRA?

The oil industry is largely unregulated.  Only 3% pure essential oil is required for the bottle to be labeled pure therapeutic essential oil.

DoTERRA is Pure and Safe

DoTERRA has the most tested, most trusted oil. Every liter of oil is tested 9 different ways by 2 independent labs before it is even purchased. Once it is purchased, it continues to be tested by our own labs. Why is it important to test small batches? You get more accurate results on the whole barrel batch if each liter is tested.  We run more than 12 tests on each liter of oil we purchase.

A plant growing in it’s indigenous or ideal environment is going to have stronger, more effective constituents.

Three ways to use essential oils

Aromatically

Benefits:

  • When you want to affect everyone in the area
  • Opens airways.
  • Helps support respiratory function
  • Affects mood
  • Freshens the air

How to:

  • Diffuse
  • Self-diffuse
  • Diffuser jewelry

Topically

Benefits:

  • Affects the skin
  • Target a specific area of concern
  • Can have a direct effect on body temperature
  • Easy to use on the go
  • Can slow the absorption and deepen the penetration of the oils when used with a carrier
  • Able to layer oils for increased benefit
  • A safe and effective way to treat the whole body
  • Immediate comfort

How to:

  • My rule of thumb: always dilute unless there is reason not to
  • Layer Oils on back and feet by using systems of application such as Symphony of Cells or AromaTouch Technique
  • Apply oils to the bottoms of the feet, then put on socks
  • Apply roller bottles or diluted oils to an area of concern, or neck, chest, pulse points, spine, or solar plexus
  • Add oils to a massage or bath salts

Internally

Benefits:

  • Affect the digestive tract
  • Systemic effect
  • Get the most out of your oils, no waste when used internally, no flash off.
  • Beneficial to the mouth, throat and immune system

How to:

  • Drip under tongue – the fastest way to enter the bloodstream
  • Put in a veggie cap and swallow
  • Drink in your water or tea with an emulsifier, such as stevia or honey
  • Use in cooking or baking
  • Add to honey

Diluting – what is it and how do I do it correctly?

I dilute just about every time I use oils.  Diluting slows the penetration of the molecules, lengthens the duration of the penetration and helps to drive it deeper into the tissue.  All of these assist the oil in being more effective.  Diluting also acts like a glue for the volatile aromatic compounds.  When we use an oil, some is absorbed by the skin and some escape into the air, that’s how we smell them.  But when you use a fatty oil with the essential oil, more of those molecules are captured and able to penetrate the skin.  Diluting also makes it easier to spread the essential oil over a larger area.  And it protects the skin against possible sensitivities from hotter oils.  So, when in doubt, dilute!

As with all things, people differ in their opinions of how to dilute essential oils properly. This is just my take on it and how I currently use my oils.  I am a big proponent of experimenting, though, see what works best for you. Do your own research and decide for yourself how you want to handle diluting.

Oils have 3 “temperatures”

Mild

These oils can be used neat, with no dilution for most people.

Medium

These oils can be used neat, but you may prefer the feeling of them diluted.

Hot

These oils need to be diluted.

Other basic safety thoughts

  • Most citrus oils are photosensitive or phototoxic. That means if you put citrus oils on your skin and then expose said skin to the sun during the course of the next 12 hours you will burn.  It is safe to put them “where the sun don’t shine”, and you can use them aromatically or internally.
  • Oil and water need an emulsifier in order for them mix. I use stevia in my water, baking soda in my sprays and Epsom Salt for my baths or soaks.
  • Always do a patch test on the inside of your elbow or wrist if you are concerned about sensitivities. Use a carrier oil for your patch test.
  • doTERRA oils are very potent, many times you may just need a drop to get the desired effect.
  • If something feels hot, do not use water.  A fat-based oil will dilute that feeling. Use coconut, olive, avocado, or any fatty substance. Even butter or milk have worked in a pinch.
  • If you get oil in your eye, use fractionated or regular coconut oil. DO NOT USE WATER!
  • Never drip essential oils into the eyes, ears, or nose.
  • If it’s uncomfortable, apply a carrier oil.
  • Essential oils can be flammable, keep away from heat sources.
  • Keep oils out of direct sunlight and high temperatures. Store oils in a cool, dark place.
  • Keep the caps on. These are volatile aromatic compounds, so they will escape into the air and the quality of your oil will be compromised.
  • Always drink your oils out of glass or stainless steel. Citrus oils can break down or compromise the quality of most plastics.
